“Sometimes the smallest step in the right direction, ends up being the biggest step of your life. Tip toe if you must, but make sure you take that next step.”
You may recall years ago, Nike co-founder Bill Bowerman released the company’s mission statement:
To bring inspiration and innovation to every athlete* in the world.
*If you have a body, you are an athlete.
This visionary idea was born to create a brand that would encompass everyone, from professional to non-professionals athletes.
At The Next Step, our mission is to offer programs and services that are designed and tailored to support you, the athlete, on your path to recovery and wellness following an injury. A service that is not readily accessible to people with spinal cord injuries (SCI) and other neurological conditions to enhance overall well-being and recovery.
The Next Step Recovery and Wellness Centre has been able to establish partnerships with external parties who generously fund athletes who currently lack financial support for our services. This funding is made possible through donations and is held in trust, subsequently distributed to athletes who seek our assistance.
To qualify for our athlete program, you must not be currently receiving any funding from NDIS, TAC or Work Cover, and you must be committed to your recovery journey.
As an organisation who are deeply committed to transparency, those who sponsor your recovery will receive regular progress updates and may even visit our facility to meet you.
As part of our selection process, we request that you undergo an initial assessment, with a fee of $240 for the applicant.
During this assessment, we will evaluate your functional status and discuss your goals. You will also have an informal interview with our founder, Rhiannon Tracey. Unfortunately, this cost cannot be covered by the scholarship fund, as it is required before the selection of successful applicants.
All donations to The Next Step Scholarship fund can be made directly to the PayPal giving fund here.
“Giving is not just about making a donation; it’s about making a difference.” – Kathy Calvin
The Next Step Recovery and Wellness Centre is one of the few centres that provide care and support for a diverse range of conditions, including but not limited to:
Our team of passionate committee members and volunteers dedicate their time to support our organisation in various ways, from fundraising to working on projects, grant writing, and public relations.
We always have exciting opportunities for individuals to volunteer or help steer our organisation’s evolution. Since 2018, we have been raising funds through our ‘$100 brick’ fundraiser, generating over $17,000, which has been allocated for equipment, training, and our brand-new Wellness Hub.
If you’d like to purchase a brick and have your name displayed on our wall, please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
“Mal & I had never been upstairs, and I guess that’s when the mission of the Next Step became very similar to that of Spa Electrics. They wanted to give back to a not-for-profit organisation, and we were just so thrilled!” – Rhiannon Tracey
Ever since The Next Step opened in 2016, the Wellness Hub upstairs had been a long-term goal. We recognised the need to incorporate a range of services at the centre to ensure that athletes have access to everything necessary to support their recovery – mind, body, and soul.
The only way to achieve this was to expand the centre and open the upstairs area to include treatment rooms for Massage, Acupuncture, Naturopathy, and various other healing services. This space was designed to be a relaxing haven for athletes and their families during their challenging rehabilitation journeys.
Raising funds to make this dream a reality was a long-term project, but we were determined to do it! When Spa Electrics expressed their desire to donate an accessible lift, the Wellness Hub dream became a reality, and in 2019, it officially opened. Through their generosity, they enabled us to create a safe space and provide holistic healing to our athletes and their families. As a centre, we will never be able to express enough gratitude for their kindness. If you’d like to support The Next Step, please reach out to us via email.
